NASCAR rolls out the fun
To commemorate the conclusion of the Nextel Cup Series, NASCAR will pull out all the (pit) stops and celebrate its Championship Week in New York City beginning today. Here's a look at some of the featured events:
PIT STOP TOUR
What: As part of this interactive fan experience, drivers' street teams will park authentic stock cars in a dozen "Fan Zone" locations and give fans a chance to pose for a photo and even win a prize.
When: 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. today through Friday.
Where: Throughout Times Square.
NASCAR STREET TOUR
What: A parade of tricked-out Ford vehicles will cruise the entire city. Race-related gear will be given away, and fans will be allowed to play a variety of interactive video games.
When: Today through Friday.
Where: Throughout Manhattan and the surrounding boroughs.
VICTORY LAP
What: This is your chance to see really fast cars drive really slowly, as the Nextel Cup's top 10 finishers visit "Good Morning America" and then cruise around the world's busiest intersection at decidedly un-race-like velocities. Drivers include Cup champ Jimmie Johnson (right), as well as Jeff Gordon, Tony Stewart, Matt Kenseth and Carl Edwards.
Better get there early. Last year's victory lap drew more than 100,000 people.
When: 8 a.m. Wednesday.
Where: Drivers will start their engines at 44th Street and Broadway and end their lap around midtown Manhattan at the Hard Rock Cafe on 43rd Street and Broadway.
FAN FEST
What: Getting in on the fun, Hard Rock Cafe will open its doors to NASCAR drivers and their fans as it transforms the music-themed restaurant into an ode to speed, adrenaline and burnt rubber.
Items on display in the cafe will include various race series trophies, including the Nextel Cup trophy (which oddly enough bears no resemblance to a cup).
Drivers and crew members also will be on hand to sign autographs and give away race-related prizes.
When: 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday and Friday.
Where: Hard Rock Cafe, 43rd Street and Broadway, Manhattan.
