Stewart, Busch Join Kenseth Competing on His Small Hometown Track
As if a 36-race NASCAR Sprint Cup Series schedule isn't grueling enough, Tony Stewart spends his spare time doing even more racing.
Tuesday night, the two-time Cup champion was with drivers Kyle Busch and Matt Kenseth competing in a super late model race at Madison International Speedway. The half-mile asphalt oval is in the town of Rutland near Kenseth's hometown of Cambridge.
Stewart estimates he will compete in about 15 extracurricular races outside his full-time job this season. Most are late model events on dirt tracks, and a handful of winged sprint car and asphalt oval races.
Meanwhile, Kenseth and Busch say they'll compete in five additional races outside their normal schedule. At the Cup level, Busch is Stewart's teammate and in his first season working at Joe Gibbs Racing.
Veteran racer Steve Carlson from West Salem notched his fourth super late model victory Tuesday night, one spot ahead of Kenseth. Busch finished ninth and Stewart was 16th.
